Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
