British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
