Entire Career of Salary Not Enough for UK Employees to Join Richest 10%, Report Reveals

According to fresh research, the typical earner in the UK would need 52 years' worth of earnings to reach the net worth of the richest 10% in the country.

Expanding Economic Disparity Through the Years

The analysis examined net worth information including the Covid pandemic period and determined that back in the pre-financial crisis era, it would have taken nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to join the top 10th of the wealth distribution.

A research lead associated with the study commented: "Wealth gaps in Britain are presently so substantial that a average worker accumulating their complete salary across their entire working life would still not be able to reach the top of the economic scale."

Assessing the Wealth Divide

The research found that the difference between the wealth of the average person and someone in the wealthiest decile was £1 million in the mid-2000s, but had widened to £1.3m in inflation-adjusted terms by the pandemic years.

The economist further stated: "These disparities are particularly worrying as financial progression in Britain is restricted – those who commence life wealthy tend to stay wealthy, and the opposite holds true."

Comparative Financial Divide

Although the economic divide growing in actual numbers, the portion of overall assets in the UK held by the most affluent homes – known as "comparative financial divide" – has been "broadly stable since the eighties," per the study.

Over this timeframe, overall assets in the UK rose substantially from triple the gross domestic product, to almost 7.5 times.

Contributors of Wealth Inequality

So-called "unearned" increases, via rising house prices and changes in pension valuations, were the main drivers of the growing financial disparity since 2010, per the analysis.

These appreciations tended to accrue to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – intensifying the age-based economic gap.

Intergenerational Financial Divides

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and sixty-somethings more than doubled in inflation-adjusted terms, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to £310k.

Area-Based Differences

Additionally, there were pronounced geographic differences, with the median value of wealth in recent years reaching £290,000 in south-east England, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, versus £110k in the NE of England.

Pandemic Period Impact

Throughout the COVID period, when countless laborers were protected by the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the data shows numerous families were capable of accumulating, increasing their wealth.

Higher-income households performed significantly better, however. "The median home in the lowest-income quintile saw their liquid savings grow by only eighty pounds over the pandemic period (2019-20 to 2021-22), approximately equivalent to the pre-crisis period. On the other hand, the median home in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings rise by £4,200," the study reveals.
