One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will take a three-month hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with others instead handling more material or additional to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Today, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple at most releasing each annually, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
