This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty.
