Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
